AVB Mousery

Inside the Mousery

My mice are fed a mix that I make, which is available at all times along with fresh water in water bottles. That mix contains a high quality hamster/gerbil mix, lab blocks, wild bird seed, whole grain pasta, oats, Fromm puppy or kitten food (depending on which is available at the pet store), and millet. Along with that I offer them 2 freeze-dried mealworms each daily, milkbone puppy biscuits occasionally (mainly for does who are pregnant or ones with litters), a few cherrios daily, sunflower seeds 2 times a week, and pumpkin seeds 2 times a week. Any corn in in the hamster/gerbil mix is taken out. Sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds are offered only to young, healthy, active mice as they can cause a mouse to become obese.

A 10 gallon aquarium is the minimum housing for a buck or for a couple of does. I currently house 2 females in a 10 gallon (soon to be 3), 2 females in a 20 gallon long aquarium (currently holding a litter, their mother, and a nanny), and a wire cage housing a buck. In each cage there are multiple nesting spots, a food bowl, water bottle, and a wheel. Wheels are very important, they provide stimulation and exercise to the mice. Along with the necessities are other toys that allow the mice to explore, climb, dig, tunnel, and chew. I use carefresh in the doe tanks and a mix of carefresh and aspen shavings in the buck cage.

Any new additions are quarantined for 2 weeks in a room far away from the "mouse room". While it is best to quarantine them in a completely different place, as some health problems can be transferred through the air, it is just not possible for me to do so. I do the best I can by housing them on the opposite side of the house.

Mousery Goals

  • Obtain quality stock in colors black and tan, blue and tan, chocolate and tan, piebald, tri-color, and hopefully merle.
  • Primary focus being on black/blue/chocolate and tans
  • Go on to produce better quality offspring to better my stock and those variations as a whole

Main Doe Tank

Picture

A 20 gallon long aquarium which currently houses 2 does. One currently has a litter of 8 inside the wooden house which is why it is covered over with bedding. The other doe is a first time nanny and is doing a very good job at it. Inside the tank is a wheel, small wooden hiding spot, water bottle, food dish, large wooden house, and a wooden ladder. Once the litter is weaned I plan on keeping 2-3 females to live in here.

Second Doe Tank

Picture

A 10 gallon aquarium which currently houses 2 does. Hopefully if Aria's litter is of good quality, another doe will be living in there with them. Inside the tank is a food dish, water bottle, part of an old wire cage used to climb on and to hold up the water bottle, a wooden house, wheel, and a hay ball nest.

Buck Cage
